13-year-old Irvine boy dies when his bicycle is struck by SUV
The accident happened this morning at Michelson Drive and Butler Street.
By SALVADOR HERNANDEZ
The Orange County Register
IRVINE – A boy was killed this morning when his bicycle was struck by an SUV in an accident that police are still investigating.
Jason Kramer, 13, of Irvine, was wearing a helmet when he was hit at about 9 a.m. at the intersection of Michelson Drive and Butler Street, Irvine police Lt. Rick Handfield said. The Mercedes SUV was driven by an unidentified 53-year-old woman. Jason was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana where he died of his injuries.
"We do not suspect that drugs, alcohol or excessive speed were involved," Handfield said. "I just know (the driver) is tragically upset about the accident. It's just a real sad event," Handfield said.
The accident is being investigated, Handfield said. Anyone with information is asked to contact detective Jonathan Cherney at 949-724-7024.

Irvine home to dangerous crossroads
Report: Culver Drive/Michelson Drive intersection is worst in Irvine.
By SONYA SMITH
The Orange County Register
IRVINE – Increasing traffic, recurring driving violations and high speed limits have made the intersection of Culver and Michelson drives the most dangerous in the city.
According to the city's most recent data, in 2004 the intersection had 12 traffic accidents – the highest in the city.
Those figures, and the death of 13-year-old Jason Kramer near the intersection in September, have prompted residents to ask the city to make the area safer. The City Council, in response, asked staff to study the intersection and report back in mid-December.
The problem:
Holly Demetrescu, president of the nearby University Park Homeowners Association, said the intersection and surrounding area have several problems. Those include:
• Merging and driveways are two problems on Michelson near the intersection. Two lanes quickly drop to one lane in the same area as a bus stop and two driveways – one for a gas station and the other for a shopping center.
• Illegal left turns being made out of the shopping center onto Michelson.
• No signal across Michelson between the Wholesome Choice food market and residences.
• Pedestrians not seen in a crosswalk near the market.
• Speed limits are too high on Michelson's west side at 45 mph.
• U-turns made in medians on Culver before the intersection.
• High volume of traffic and lack of parking because of nearby UCI and Park West.
What's next:
City staff has been working on the intersection for several years – adding a right-turn lane on Culver, installing lights in the crosswalk and changing the signal timing.
But issues still exist and Cindy Krebbs, the city's manager of transit and transportation, is working with residents and staff on new solutions.
"We're willing to talk about anything because we drive by it every day. You take your life in your hands to go through that intersection," Demetrescu said.

Jason remembered through music
Family of 'musical genius' is donating instruments in memory of their son who died in September
BY JORGE BARRIENTOS
IRVINE WORLD NEWS
Jason Kramer's love for music will live on for years to come. At least that's what parents of the teenage musician and student who died in September hope.
Using donation from Jason's memorial fund, Dan and Lucy Kramer are donating $1,000 each year on Jason birthday, Feb. 21, to buy instruments for students in need. He would have been 14 years old last week.
"Jason was a musical genius," Dan Kramer, Jason's father, said. "Hopefully, this will help someone in need."
The Kramers will donate $1,000 for five years toward Irvine Public School Foundation's instrument rental program that will be used to purchase violins, one of the several instruments played by the Kramers' only child.
The violins – at least four purchased every year to begin with – will be targeted to the 100 or so students who financially have trouble renting an instrument every year. Each year, the foundation rents more than 1,000 instruments to students in Irvine Unified, with proceeds going back into music programs across the district.
A plaque will adorn each violin in memory of Jason.
"We're looking at the kids that can't really afford it," Dan said. "We're hoping we turn someone else onto the violin just like Jason did."
Jason began playing violin in fourth grade at Vista Verde. He excelled at it, Dan said, and soon picked up the trombone, the drums and the piano. His musical genius can be heard in a CD he made a month before he was killed after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle on Michelson Drive.
Jason made the CD, available at Jim's Music, using a synthesizer he began playing six months before he died. He performed more than 20 of his favorites – "Layla" by Eric Clapton, "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin and "Let it Be" by The Beatles – as well as original compositions. Dan has made and given away about 700 copies of the CD so far.
The family has also decided to purchase and donate a new piano to Rancho San Joaquin Middle School to replace the school's piano from 1974. Also, the school's PTA donated $500 to Jason's fund, have displayed memorials at school events and will dedicate a full page in the yearbook for Jason, said assistant principal Scott Bowman.
"Jason was a wonderful musician," he said. "He was very well liked, and a really nice, young man."
Several friends posted birthday wishes on Jason's MySpace Web site Feb. 21. One reads: "Happy birthday! Today I wore your favorite color, red … I listened to your CD all day, it made me so sad."
The foundation will honor Jason at the Donald Bren Honors Concerts on March 13 and March 20. The concert features about 600 student musicians in the district.
"He just seemed like a very remarkable human being. It just breaks your heart," said Jaimee Niles, foundation chief development officer. "It's a beautiful tribute. It's the right thing to do."
Jason's memorial fund has amounted about $15,000 so far, Dan said. The family will donate $1,000 in March to the Children's Hospital of Orange County's Cancer Institute – Jason was diagnosed with leukemia at age 4.
"This fund is going to do some good," Dan said.

Bicyclist Critically Hurt After Hit-And-Run Crash
(CBS) RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA , Calif. A bicyclist was in critical condition Saturday night after being struck in a hit-and-run crash by an unlicensed driver, authorities said.
The 58-year-old bicyclist from Coto de Caza was riding in a bicycle lane north on Antonio Parkway near Valeroso shortly after 3 p.m. when a vehicle heading the same direction veered into the lane and struck him, said Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Augustin Hernandez Perez, 31, got out of the vehicle with his 4-year-old son and ran away, said Lt. Lee Trujillo.
Deputies caught him about a mile away in an industrial complex, he said.
Perez was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and his son was returned to his mother, Amormino said.
Perez had no driver's license or other identification and spoke no English, and authorities were trying to determine his immigration status, Trujillo said, adding that his last known address was in San Juan Capistrano.
Alcohol did not appear to have played a role in the crash, Amormino said.
The bicyclist, who struck the hood and windshield before landing on the road, was in critical condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, Trujillo said.
