9:00 AM2013 Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling - Sunday May 5th Join top professionals, amateurs and excited kids as they race around downtown Dana Point on the best race course in America overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean and spectacular Dana Point Harbor on historic PCH. We will ride from Deerfield on an out and back route avoiding the steepest climbs. The race is on the bluffs so there is no climbing out of the harbor on the route back. Stay and view the races as long as you want. There will be standing and walking around so slippery cleats might not be the best choice of footwear. You need to be in the tour mode not the racing mode today. We only will be watching ! Check out their link at WWW.danapointgrandprix.com.

8:00 AMBCI will kick off a new Century Training Program on Saturday, May 18, 2013 that will run for nine weeks. This is not just about miles on the saddle, but a complete program that will address hydration, nutrition, electrolytes, and supplements, bike preparation, heart rate monitors, clothing, and bike fit. If you are planning to do your first century or want to go even longer, you need this program! This is for both men and women. All of the rides will be "No Drop." We will begin with a 15-20 minute pre-ride information session at Deerfield Park. Most rides will start at 8:AM; longer rides will start earlier. The first ride will be about 40 miles and get progressively longer during the nine weeks. The last ride will be about 80 miles. If you are training for a metric century (62 miles), you can choose to stop after week six. Interested? Sign up by email to Randy Profeta, BCI Ride Coordinator: ridecoord@bikeirvine.org

7:00 PMLast year we had a lot of fun with "What do you carry in your Seat Wedge?" Club members brought in their seat wedges and our panel of judges weighed in on the contents and prizes were awarded for the best wedges in several categories.

This year we have a little different twist. We would like to see what you carry in your Jersey Pockets during your rides. Bring the stuff that you put in your Jersey pockets for your typical ride that may not fit in your wedge.

Now a bit about the Jersey. We bet a lot of you have one particular Jersey that you would call your most memorable: your first century or double, your longest ride, a European tour, your best (or worst) race, the ride when you met your sweetheart. Wear it to the meeting. You will be given two minutes to tell why this Jersey is important to you. Then you can show the judges what you have around back, in your Jersey pockets.

The winner will be awarded a new BCI Jersey! You will have to fill the pockets yourself.

What a great evening this should be! A light dinner and a lot of fun. We look forward to seeing you there!

Rules for "What is in your Jersey Pocket"

  • Your stuff must be able to fit in your Jersey Pocket. Nothing dangerous, please!
  • Participants must wear their jersey and empty the pocket contents while a judge is present.
  • Mini pumps may stick out of the pockets but must fit securely.
  • If you usually ride with food items in your jersey pockets, bring some samples for the judges!

All DayWe are doing it again - for the 23rd year - an overnight tour from Irvine to Carlsbad (and beyond)!

Please check your calendar for June 22nd/23rd - the first weekend of this summer and if interested -please see all the details at www.sellin.com/solstice/XXIII

Dev and I already drove the route from Carlsbad up to Vista and it will be a nice new option inland from the coast.
Sunday will have a great breakfast option and the San Luis Rey River Trail all the way down to Oceanside harbor for more breakfast options before heading up the coast into Pendleton - check out the posted routes!

Metrolink's $10 weekend pass makes it easy to make various short cuts if the full metric century is daunting. Last year we skipped San Clemente to Oceanside on the train and got to Carlsbad strangely fresh and able to climb to San Marcos with no trouble!

I hope you will be able to join us.

s1Randy, I think that the yellow ride on March 3 was to hilly and difficult for many of the traditional yellow riders. I heard many complaints and a number of riders took alternate routes. I found it the be the most challenging yellow or even blue ride that I have experienced since I joined the club 4 years ago. Thanks for considering a modification of this ride in the future. Rich McCarthyThanks for your comments. SAT20 M2 shows as VERY HILLY and has several long climbs. Ridge Park hits 12% in spots. This ride gets praise and complaints. As a work-around, we will look at providing another Yellow (medium) route when this ride is offered.
